The moments of distractions that I encountered during the movie were brought on by all of you. I found myself thinking about your portayals of these characters. I didn't compare Meryl Streep to Bernadette Peters; I thought of Julia striking a grand pose after her transformation in the role. I found myself disappointed that the audience of the movie didn't get to laugh when Jacob gleefully exclaimed, "Squeeze, Pal!" Or the behind-the-scenes moments of Molly struggling with "I pulled it from a maiden in a tower," Doug's body rolls as he attempted his three simple dance steps, Lulu's sore knees as she hustled across stage, Brett's enthusiastic variations on "Shut Up!," Matthew Alexander working hard to keep his tree limbs straight, Rosie opting for a slightly more subdued hair color so her blue "tree leaves" did not confuse people, and countless other memories that are taking up space in my brain. And this is all one year later! The Witch sings, "Careful the things you say/children will listen," meaning that young people learn from what they hear from the adults around them, but based on my experience at the movie today, it could be said that the things that you said and did have left a lasting impression on me. The cast of the Into the Woods movie will never be you, kids, but they're most definitely still full of wisdom and a lot of fun!
My anticipation for Into the Woods had been building since I heard the movie was happening. Could all of those actors sing? Would they make a faithful adaptation of the musical? Yes, on both accounts. For me, the standouts were "Stay with Me" and "Agony." They each capture such a different tone of the show - "Stay with Me" expressing the Witch's genuine desire to shield Rapunzel from all the darkness that the world may sometimes possess and "Agony" mocking the insincerity of those society tends to praise. As a teacher, I suppose the former strikes the closest to home; I'm sure your parents would agree. Witches, and adults do their best to protect the Rapunzels of the world from hurt or harm, but ultimately Rapunzel or Jenny or Billy or any other maturing child must experience life and find their own way through the woods.

We had a great turnout again this year, and some incredible talent was displayed at each of the auditions. The callback list will be posted, and our rehearsal will begin as soon as we return from break. Whether you're on the list or not, know that Mrs. Cantwell and I so appreciate your bravery in auditioning (it's not an easy thing to do!). There are many ways to still get involved in our own show, and if you'd like to help Mr. Giordano with stage crew, look for him in cafeterias when he's trying to find volunteers or find him in the hallway to let him know you're interested. There are also some great programs outside of school to get involved with, if your true desire is to be on stage. Thanks again for giving it your all! Happy holidays!
