Last week I had a pretty incredible experience. I sang on the cast album for the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet. The show takes place in Russia and contains lots of big ensemble numbers, so they needed more voices to fill out the sound. It was pretty incredible being conducted by the man who wrote the music and getting to ask Josh Groban, one of the show's stars, questions about his process. There were so many of us in that room, but when we sang, we came together to form one sound - the sound of the people of Russia. That's what it means to be in an ensemble. We didn't know each other going into that experience, but we left sharing a connection that nobody else would be able to understand. We felt a rush when we sang and got to know each other in between takes. I sincerely hope that all of you very different people feel that same common bond when you come together to form the sound of the High School of the Performing Arts. It's something nobody else will understand.
See below for some of the photos from my experience, and listen to Josh Groban talk about how he is making the character he's playing his own. It was previously played by the guy standing next to him in the video. Some of you may be listening to the CD that I made you of our music, which is great, but figure out ways to put YOUR own stamp on your character instead of imitating what you hear on that CD.
